About the Craft

Copper Enamel or Meenakari is a near extinct craft of fusing glass colours onto copper surfaces. This craft is practiced in a small village in Alibag, Maharashtra, there are currently two families retaining the lore and 15 artisans who ply the craft.

The glass powder is laid onto the copper surface in the requisite patterns and the assembly is heated to melt the glass to form an enamel coat on the copper surface.

This glass enameling lends a vibrant color to the copper surface, and prevents oxidising.
